AUSTSWIM is proud to have played a key role in advancing aquatic education, water safety, and female leadership across Fiji through the Commonwealth Games Australia Empowering Women Initiative.

Supported by Commonwealth Games Australia’s Empowering Women grant, AUSTSWIM Trainer Alina Graham travelled to Fiji to deliver internationally recognised aquatic education and coaching qualifications, helping build a stronger, more sustainable aquatic workforce while creating new opportunities for women in the sector.

Building Capability Through Education

Over April and May 2026, AUSTSWIM training was delivered in both Suva and Lautoka, ensuring participants from across Fiji had access to professional development opportunities. Courses included:

  • Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (TSW)
  • Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics (INF)
  • Towards Competitive Strokes and Coaching (TCSC)

A total of 34 coaches and teachers successfully completed their training, gaining Australian-recognised AUSTSWIM qualifications that enhance their ability to deliver safe, high-quality aquatic education within their communities.

These qualifications not only strengthen individual capabilities but also contribute to Fiji’s long-term capacity to provide effective learn-to-swim and water safety programs.

Creating Opportunities for Women in Aquatics

A defining achievement of the initiative was its success in empowering women to pursue leadership opportunities within aquatics.

Of the 34 participants who completed training, 28 were women. This strong representation demonstrates the growing demand for professional pathways that support women in aquatic education, coaching, and community leadership.

By equipping women with industry-recognised skills and qualifications, the program is helping to create visible role models for future generations while supporting greater gender equity across aquatic sports and education.

Women often play a vital role in community education and child development. By strengthening their capacity to teach swimming and water safety, the impact extends far beyond the pool, reaching families, schools, and communities throughout Fiji.

Supporting Water Safety and Drowning Prevention

As an island nation, Fiji faces unique challenges when it comes to water safety. Building local expertise is a critical step in reducing drowning risks and creating safer aquatic environments.

Through this initiative, newly qualified coaches and teachers are now better equipped to deliver quality swimming and water safety education, helping more children and families develop essential life-saving skills.

The benefits of the program extend beyond professional development, contributing directly to community wellbeing and long-term drowning prevention efforts.

Partnerships That Drive Lasting Change

AUSTSWIM extends its sincere thanks to Fiji Aquatics and Commonwealth Games Australia for supporting this important initiative and helping create meaningful opportunities for women in aquatics.

The success of this program highlights the power of collaboration in delivering positive outcomes for communities, strengthening aquatic education systems, and creating pathways for women to lead and thrive.

Together, we are helping build safer waters, stronger communities, and a more inclusive future for aquatics across the Pacific.
