This course is aimed at people entering the aquatics and community recreation industry. If you have a love for swimming, physical activity, learning and children – this course is your entry point into the aquatics and community recreation.

The purpose of this entry course is to provide the knowledge and information required to professionally deliver swimming and water safety programs and services to a diverse range of people who use aquatic environments. This is the base accreditation that you must gain before you can attempt any of the AUSTSWIM specialist extension courses.

The accreditation of AUSTSWIM Teachers is not only recognised in each state and territory of Australia, but also in many countries overseas. This puts you in the best position to find employment at the end of your course and opens up many opportunities across the country.

The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (TSW) course is the benchmark for candidates looking to begin a career as a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety. The purpose of this entry course is to provide the knowledge and information required to professionally deliver swimming and water safety programs and services to a diverse range of people who use aquatic environments. This is the base accreditation that you must gain before you can attempt any of the AUSTSWIM specialist extension courses.

Upon completion of all the course requirements, candidates will be accredited with the AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence which is valid for three years. The course includes vocational education and training requirements, plus non-accredited training requirements which have been specifically designed by AUSTSWIM. This is the industry standard for Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety.

The TSW course is designed to enable candidates to understand how to engage and interact directly with a diverse range of students in a way that makes a difference to our communities.

Candidates in Australia:

  • Must be an Australian or NZ Citizen, or hold an appropriate VISA allowing the candidate to undertake education. Please note: AUSTSWIM is not a CRICOS provider and cannot enrol students on an international student visa.

  • Must provide their valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) number at the time of enrolment for verification by AUSTSWIM. A USI is a reference number required by the Commonwealth statutory office (Student Identifiers Act 2014) and is obtained from the USI Registrar.

Candidates in Australia and New Zealand:

Must provide a current Working with Children Check (WWCC). Although this is not expressly required before enrolling, it must be provided prior to commencing industry training.

All Candidates:

  • May enrol in an AUSTSWIM course at 16 years of age. However, candidates will not be eligible to receive the AUSTSWIM accreditation until they are 17 years of age.

  • Are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to perform the required aquatic skills.  

  • Are required to have access to a computer and the internet to access the online modules outside of face-to-face training.  

This interactive course is delivered in a blended format, consisting of theory and practical components.

It requires attendance at a face-to-face training session over two full days and the successful completion of an online interactive component. Candidates are also required to complete supervised industry training in a swim teaching environment in a range of conditions.

The course consists of theory and practical components:

  1. Theory component – topics may be offered through classroom attendance or selected topics via AUSTSWIM’s e-learning centre.

  2. Practical component – involves swimming activities that may be carried out in shallow or deep water.

Candidates have 12 months to complete their training for all AUSTSWIM courses unless otherwise stated. This means the completion and submission of all assessments within 12 months of commencing the course.

Assessment of the candidate’s knowledge and skills is undertaken throughout all three delivery modes.

Topics include:

  • Introduction – an overview of AUSTSWIM and the aquatic industry

  • Plan, deliver and review a lesson

  • How people learn

  • Being an effective teacher

  • Principles of movement in water

  • Aquatic safety, survival and rescue skills

  • Water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility

  • Teaching safer diving skills

  • Towards efficient stroke development

  • Legal responsibilities for the AUSTSWIM Teacher

To receive your AUSTSWIM Accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted:

  • Completed Teacher Declaration: agree to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct.

  • Completed brief online course evaluation.

  • Evidence of holding a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) statement of attainment.

Who is covered?

All employed and volunteer AUSTSWIM Licenced Teachers and contract* AUSTSWIM Licenced Teachers while engaged by a swim school.  

You must be a resident of Australia or Singapore* and the holder of a current AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence issued in Australia.  

In addition, the policy will cover an Australian resident while working in a swim teaching role overseas.

How much am I covered for?

  • $20Million Public Liability any one occurrence  

  • $20Million Product Liability any one occurrence  

  • $10Million Professional Indemnity Insurance any one claim and in the aggregate

When this term is used in relation to aquatic education, it refers to accepted ideals and beliefs about the teaching of swimming and water safety. The Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following units:

  • SISCAQU008 Instruct water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills

  • SISCAQU009 Instruct water safety and survival skills    

  • SISCAQU010 Instruct swimming strokes

  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
