AUSTSWIM strengthens its training workforce to teach MORE Australians how to swim and be safe around water

Written by AUSTSWIM News | 12/02/2026 4:34:47 AM

Over the past year, AUSTSWIM has welcomed 30 talented new Trainers, strengthening and expanding its national trainer network enabling the 45-year-old trusted not-for-profit to train more swim teachers and help more Australians to learn to swim and be safe around water.

“In 2025 across Australia we delivered almost 1000 courses to over 7000 new and existing swim teachers and aqua exercise instructors, and we’re confident that with our new trainers, and the upskilling of 20 of our existing trainers, we are now in a stronger position to train even more qualified swim teachers, who are the nation’s frontline for drowning prevention,” said AUSTSWIM CEO Brad Maunsell.

Mr Maunsell said AUSTSWIM’s ability to attract more trainers, growing its pool of trainers from 80 to 110, was due to the organisation’s history and unwavering focus on quality swim teacher education, along with great pay ($54 an hour plus super),career opportunities, and a proactive recruitment campaign.

“Our trainers tell us they also welcome the chance to work anywhere, and the opportunity to contribute to drowning prevention whilst mentoring of the next generation of swim teachers and aqua exercise instructors.”

Mr Maunsell said AUSTSWIM was always on the lookout for more trainers, with an ideal candidate being an experienced swim teacher or aqua exercise instructor with a strong teaching history, and a passion for mentoring and developing others.

A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is also needed, however Mr Maunsell said AUSTSWIM was open to supporting potential trainers to gain their TAE in special circumstances. Expressions of interest can be sent to: trainers@austswim.com.au

Mr Maunsell said AUSTSWIM was also pleased to be working collaboratively with other not-for-profit training organisations Life Saving Victoria (LSV) and Swim Coaches and Teachers Australia (SCTA) to host a joint Trainer workshop at LSV Headquarters in Port Melbourne on 26 Feb.

“This is the first ever collaborative event of this kind in Victoria where Trainers will have the opportunity to update their knowledge, skills and understanding together,” said Mr Maunsell. More information here.
