Today is World Drowning Prevention Day, serving as a crucial reminder of the importance of water safety. AUSTSWIM is calling on all Australians to "go blue" to raise awareness and help prevent drowning.
Drowning is a global health crisis, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting over 2.5 million deaths in the last decade. This equates to 650 deaths every day, 26 every hour—a silent epidemic of preventable deaths. Children are especially at risk, with the highest drowning rates among those aged 1–4 years, followed by children aged 5–9 years.
AUSTSWIM is dedicated to combating this issue by promoting vital swimming and water safety skills. We aim to recruit and educate as many new teachers as possible to expand our reach and impact.
Think back to who taught you to swim. Whether it was a parent, a friend, or a trained teacher, that person provided you with a life-saving skill. Now, imagine how many lives could be saved if everyone had access to the same opportunity. This is the mission AUSTSWIM strives to achieve.
Even though it's winter in Australia, drowning prevention remains a critical concern. Drowning is preventable, and everyone can contribute to reducing these tragic incidents.
AUSTSWIM believes that everyone has the right to be safe in, on, and around water. Our "Summer Teachers Are Made in Winter" campaign underscores the importance of training swimming teachers year-round to ensure a skilled workforce is ready for the summer.
By becoming an AUSTSWIM teacher, you play a pivotal role in saving lives and fostering a culture of water safety.
Join us in spreading awareness on World Drowning Prevention Day today and everyday!
