Our History

AUSTSWIM’s passion for the aquatic industry has seen us grow and evolve over more than 45 years, continually strengthening our contribution to swimming and water safety education across Australia.

From our beginnings as a collaborative, industry-led organisation, AUSTSWIM has consistently focused on innovation, quality and evidence-based practice. This commitment has allowed us to support generations of swimming and aquatic teachers and, in turn, the wider Australian community.

Our innovation has positioned us as an industry leader. Over time, AUSTSWIM has led the sector through a number of Australian-first initiatives, including:

  • The first Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course
  • The first national teacher licensing system
  • The first aquatic education organisation to gain ISO certification
  • The first Teacher of Access and Inclusion course
  • The first Infant and Preschool swimming course
  • The first Adults swimming course
  • Ongoing and significant investment in education and learning technology

Today, AUSTSWIM has trained more than 450,000 swimming and aquatic teachers and supports a workforce of almost 28,000 licensed AUSTSWIM teachers nationwide.
