Course Overview

The Teacher of Adults course equips swim teachers with the skills to confidently teach adults in aquatic environments. Adult learners range from those who have never had the opportunity to learn to swim, to those who wish to improve their skills, fitness and overall swimming performance.  

The course focuses on adult learning principles, water confidence, stroke development and safe lesson delivery.

Course Details

AUSTSWIM is committed to ensuring that all learners are enrolled in courses appropriate to their skills, capabilities and eligibility.

1. Must hold a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (TSW) accreditation

  • Candidates will be required to provide evidence of a TSW Statement of Attainment.

2. Minimum Age

  • Candidates must be 16 years of age before commencing the course.

3. Technology and Digital Access

  • Candidates must have access to a computer or a suitable device with internet access to complete the required online learning and assessment activities.

The course is delivered through a blended learning model comprising:

  • One day face-to-face workshop incorporating structured theory sessions, practical instruction and assessment activities.
  • Self-paced online eLearning including underpinning knowledge content and theory-based assessment tasks (approximately 2 hours).
  • Workplace training under supervision, enabling candidates to practise and demonstrate required skills in a real workplace environment.
  • During the face-to-face workshop through practical demonstrations and activities.
  • Throughout supervised workplace training.
  • While delivering lessons under supervision.
  • Via completion of the online theory assessment components.

Assessment Requirements

  • Candidates have 12 months to complete their course unless otherwise stated.

Topics include:

  1. Why teach adults to swim?
  2. Understanding the nature of the adult swimmer.
  3. Health, medical and safety issues.
  4. Warm up, flexibility and stretching for the adult swimmer.
  5. The different types of adult swimmers.

To receive your AUSTSWIM Accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted:

  • Completed Teacher Declaration: agree to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct.  
  • Completed brief online course evaluation.
  • Evidence of holding a current (CPR – Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) statement of attainment. (HLTAID009 or equivalent)
  • An endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.
