Units of Competency

The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics - Access and Inclusion contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for:

 SISCAQU027 Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment
 SISCAQU028 Assist participants with disability during aquatic activities

Course Overview

The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics – Access and Inclusion course equips swim teachers with the skills to support people of all abilities in inclusive aquatic environments.

You’ll explore adaptive strategies, communication approaches and safe frameworks to help participants of all abilities enjoy and benefit from aquatic activities.

This course is ideal for:

  • Swim teachers working with learners of varying abilities.
  • Swim schools focused on inclusive aquatic programs.
  • Teachers who want to build confidence adapting lessons for diverse participants.

Course Details

AUSTSWIM is committed to ensuring that all learners are enrolled in courses appropriate to their skills, capabilities and eligibility.

1. Course Pre-requisite Units of Competency

  • Candidates must have completed SISSS00132 Swimming and Water Safety Teacher skill set or hold the following units of competency:
    • SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills; and
    •  SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills
  • If you do NOT hold a Statement of Attainment (SOA) for these units, you will receive an email after enrolling in the Access and Inclusion course with instructions on how to enrol in the required online prerequisite program: Teach Water Familiarisation & Water Safety Skills.
  • Alternatively, if you already hold the units, you are NOT required to enrol into the prerequisite course. However, you MUST upload your Statement of Attainment in the designated section of your aXcelerate Learner Portal.

2. Minimum Age

  • Candidates must be 16 years of age before commencing the course.

3. Citizenship and Visa Eligibility

Candidates must be:

  • An Australian citizen; or
  • A New Zealand citizen; or
  • The holder of a visa that permits participation in education and training in Australia. Individuals on a VISA must check their visa conditions before enrolling. Start a VISA query here.

AUSTSWIM is not registered on CRICOS and does not enrol students on an International Student Visa (Subclass 500).

Evidence of citizenship, residency or visa status must be provided at enrolment and will be retained in accordance with regulatory and privacy requirements.

4. Unique Student Identifier (USI)

  • Candidates must provide their valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) number at the time of enrolment for verification by AUSTSWIM. A USI is a reference number required by the Commonwealth statutory office (Student Identifiers Act 2014) and is obtained from the USI Registrar.

5. LLN (Language, Literacy, Numeracy) Quiz

  • All applicants are required to complete an LLN quiz as part of the pre-training review process. The LLN assessment is used to determine any support needs.

6. Working With Children Check (WWCC)

  • Candidates must hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) or equivalent clearance relevant to their state or territory. There may be exceptions for under 18s in some locations.
  •  While a WWCC is not mandatory at the point of enrolment, evidence must be provided prior to commencing any industry placement, practical training or work-based component.

7. Technology and Digital Access

  • Candidates must have access to a computer or a suitable device with internet access to complete the required online learning and assessment activities.

The course is delivered through a blended learning model comprising:

  • One day face-to-face workshop incorporating structured theory sessions, practical instruction and assessment activities.
  • Self-paced online eLearning including underpinning knowledge content and theory-based assessment tasks (approximately 2 hours).
  • Workplace training under supervision, enabling candidates to practise and demonstrate required skills in a real workplace environment.

Assessment Requirements

Candidates are assessed through a combination of:

  • During the face-to-face workshop through practical demonstrations and activities.
  • Throughout supervised workplace training.
  • While delivering lessons under supervision.
  • Via completion of the online theory assessment components.

Candidates must satisfactorily complete all assessment requirements to be deemed competent.

Topics include:

  • A journey through aquatic participation.
  • Safety and legal issues.
  • Communication and perception.
  • Plan, deliver and review.
  • Skills for movement through the water.

To receive your AUSTSWIM Accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted:

  • Completed Teacher Declaration: agree to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct.
  • Completed brief online course evaluation.
  • Evidence of holding a current (CPR – Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) statement of attainment. (HLTAID009 or equivalent)
  • An endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.
