Course Overview
The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant and Preschool Aquatics (INF) course provides the specialist knowledge and practical skills needed to teach safe, engaging aquatic lessons for babies, toddlers and preschool-aged children.
You’ll learn how to nurture early water confidence, support physical and emotional development, partner effectively with parents and caregivers, and teach foundational aquatic skills that set children up for a lifetime of safe enjoyment in the water.
This course is ideal for:
- Qualified swimming teachers wanting to work with infants and preschoolers, 6 months upwards.
- Swim schools offering infant and preschool programs.
- Teachers who enjoy working with families and carers.
What you’ll learn:
- Early childhood aquatic development patterns.
- Water familiarisation and introductory movement skills.
- Lesson planning for infants and preschoolers.
- Safe handling and progression activities.
- Supporting adults and caregivers in the learning process.
Upon successful completion, you will:
- Receive a nationally recognised extension qualification and be equipped to teach safe, engaging water sessions for babies and preschool-aged children.
- Earn 10 hours of professional development towards your AUSTSWIM licence renewal.
Course Details
AUSTSWIM is committed to ensuring that all learners are enrolled in courses appropriate to their skills, capabilities and eligibility.
1. Minimum Age

Candidates must be 16 years of age before commencing the course.
2. Technology and Digital Access
-
Candidates must have access to a computer or a suitable device with internet access to complete the required online learning and assessment activities.
The course is delivered through a blended learning model comprising:
- One day face-to-face workshop incorporating structured theory sessions, practical instruction and assessment activities.
- Self-paced online eLearning including underpinning knowledge content and theory-based assessment tasks (approximately 2 hours).
- Workplace training under supervision, enabling candidates to practise and demonstrate required skills in a real workplace environment.
Assessment Requirements
Candidates are assessed through a combination of:
- During the face-to-face workshop through practical demonstrations and activities.
- Throughout supervised workplace training.
- While delivering lessons under supervision.
- Via completion of the online theory assessment components.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete all assessment requirements to be deemed competent.
Topics include:
- Philosophy of infant and preschool aquatics.
- Early childhood development.
- Teacher, parent and child relationships.
- Health, hygiene and water safety.
- Water familiarisation.
- Aquatic skill development.
- Plan, deliver and review a lesson.
To receive your AUSTSWIM Accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted:
- Completed Teacher Declaration: agree to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct.
- Completed brief online course evaluation.
- Evidence of holding a current (CPR – Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) statement of attainment.
- An endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.
