The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course is the essential qualification for anyone wanting to teach swimming and water safety in Australia and in many countries overseas. It equips you with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver safe, effective swimming lessons and water safety education to students in a variety of aquatic environments.

This nationally recognised qualification is trusted by swim schools, aquatic centres and employers across Australia and internationally. Successful graduates leave job-ready and supported by Australia’s most established swim teacher education organisation.

By attending the AUSTSWIM TSW. You can then sign up to Te Mahi Ako to gain the New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics (Swim & Water Safety Teacher) (Level 3) – 40 credits.

Course Details

AUSTSWIM is committed to ensuring that all learners are enrolled in courses appropriate to their skills, capabilities and eligibility.

 1. Minimum Age 
  • Candidates must be 16 years of age before commencing the course.
2. Physical and Swimming Capability
  • Candidates must demonstrate swimming ability sufficient to safely undertake and complete all required aquatic skills, practical assessments and industry training components in deep or shallow water.
3. Police Check
  • Candidates must submit a current Police Vet. These can either be obtained through your workplace, or you can complete this form and submit here for processing. 
4. Technology and Digital Access
  • Candidates must have access to a computer or a suitable device with internet access to complete the required online learning and assessment activities.

The course is delivered through a blended learning model comprising:

  • Two (2) day face-to-face workshop incorporating structured theory sessions, practical instruction and assessment activities.
  • Self-paced online eLearning, including underpinning knowledge content and theory-based assessment tasks (approximately 8–10 hours).
  • Workplace training under supervision, enabling candidates to practise and demonstrate required skills in a real workplace environment.

Assessment Requirements

Candidates are assessed through a combination of:

  • During the face-to-face workshop through practical demonstrations and activities.
  • Throughout supervised workplace training.
  • While delivering lessons under supervision.
  • Via completion of the online theory assessment components.

Candidates must satisfactorily complete all assessment requirements to be deemed competent.

Topics include:

  • Introduction – an overview of AUSTSWIM and the aquatic industry.
  • Plan, deliver and review a lesson.
  • How people learn.
  • Being an effective teacher.
  • Principles of movement in water.
  • Aquatic safety, survival and rescue skills.
  • Water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility.
  • Teaching safer diving skills.
  • Towards efficient stroke development.
  • Legal responsibilities for the AUSTSWIM Teacher.

To receive your AUSTSWIM Accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted:

  • Completed Teacher Declaration: agree to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct.
  • Completed brief online course evaluation.
  • Evidence of holding a current (CPR – Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) statement of attainment. (HLTAID009 or equivalent)
  • An endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.
