Course Overview
Developed in collaboration with Swimming Australia, the AUSTSWIM Towards Competitive Strokes & Coaching (TCSC) course is designed to extend your knowledge and skills beyond Learn to Swim.
The AUSTSWIM Towards Competitive Strokes & Coaching course builds advanced stroke teaching capability and introduces foundational coaching principles.
This course is ideal for:
- Swimming teachers who are ready to deepen their technical expertise and extend into higher levels of learn to swim teaching.
- Aspiring licensed swim coaches who need the required certification to enrol in the Development Coaching Course and begin their coaching career in Australia.
- Anyone wanting to become a swim coach - If you have a keen interest in learning more about swimming technique and you are considering a career in the aquatic industry, this prerequisite course provides an excellent opportunity to learn.
Note: You do not need to hold an AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety qualification to enrol.

- Advanced stroke technique - how to develop the strokes with a focus on efficiency, timing, coordination and body position.
- Stroke progression - learn how to apply effective drills and progressions for improving performance.

Course Details
AUSTSWIM is committed to ensuring that all learners are enrolled in courses appropriate to their skills, capabilities and eligibility.
1. Minimum Age

Candidates must be 16 years of age before commencing the course.
Please note: You do not need to have a Swim Teacher licence to complete this course.
2. Technology and Digital Access
-
Candidates must have access to a computer or a suitable device with internet access to complete the required online quiz.
The course is delivered through a blended learning model comprising:
- One-day workshop – 8 hours incorporating theory and practical in water session.
Assessment Requirements
- An online quiz that must be completed on the same day as the workshop.
- A 100% pass mark is required for the quiz.
Candidates receive a completion email, followed by a Certificate of Completion.
Topics include:
- Effective teaching and coaching, language and terminology.
- Safeguarding in sport.
- The competitive environment: Managing squads and larger groups.
- Swimming fundamentals and biomechanics, starts and turns.
- Freestyle/backstroke/breaststroke and butterfly rules and practices.
- Practical application, learning and practising the drills.
- Next steps and opportunities.
