I NEED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
10 hours of Professional Development (PD) is required to renew your AUSTSWIM licence. PD refers to any formal or informal training you have undertaken that develops your knowledge and skills as a swimming and water safety teacher. This may include industry PD such as conferences or events, licence upskilling including extension courses or formal accreditations. It may also include online learning or day-to-day professional development through your role as a current swimming and water safety teacher within a swim school or aquatic facility.
AUSTSWIM's online professional development modules are designed to keep you connected to current opportunities within the industry in order to further develop your career. Exclusive offers apply to current AUSTSWIM licence holders, however, our PD opportunities are open to all swimming and water safety teachers in the industry.

HOW TO RENEW YOUR AUSTSWIM TEACHER LICENCE
An AUSTSWIM Licence is valid for three years and must be renewed prior to the expiry date to remain valid. Your expiry date can be found on your AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.
RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS
- Provide evidence of 20 hours of practical teaching experience within the past 3 years.
- Provide evidence of 10 hours of professional development within the past 3 years.
RENEWAL PRICE $275
- This covers 3 years of AUSTSWIM Teacher registration, 3 years of personal teacher insurance cover, administration and processing fees, and a new digital licence.

LATE FEES
- $50 – late fee incurred if license has expired up to 3 months.
- $100 - late fee incurred if license has expired for longer than 3 months and less than 12 months.
If your AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence has been expired for longer than 12 months – you will be required to complete one of the following:
- Enrol in online Industry Upskill Training (expired no longer than 3 years)
- Re-enrol and complete the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (TSW) course.
- Apply for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL). Must have current documentation (3 years or less)

PLEASE NOTE: AUSTSWIM Extension courses will no longer automatically renew the AUSTSWIM Teacher licence. This is to ensure AUSTSWIM continues to uphold the highest quality standards of swimming and water safety education.
PRICING
As of July 2024 the standard fee for a renewal is $275AUD - this covers 3 years of registration, 3 years of insurance, admin fees, and a new digital licence card. If you have not expired yet, your new three (3) year licence will commence from your current renewal due date. If you were to submit after expiry, the following late fees may apply:

AUSTSWIM is Australia’s national organisation for the Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety courses.
Our vision is that every Australian will be taught swimming and water safety skills by an Accredited AUSTSWIM Teacher, enabling them to enjoy aquatic environments and activities in a safer way. The AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence is recognised as the industry standard for Swimming and Water Safety courses and is delivered and recognised in each state and territory of Australia and many countries overseas.
The AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence is recognised by the industry as the minimum requirement to be a Swimming and Water Safety teacher.

Recognition of Prior learning
WHAT IS RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING?
AUSTSWIM recognises that participants will have acquired vocational skills from a variety of different sources, other than formal training. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) refers to the assessment process in which a candidate may prove they have met the requirements for the unit/s of competency.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF GAINING RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)
The RPL assessment process requires a candidate to undergo an initial assessment to determine eligibility, and if approved a longer formal assessment. The RPL process assesses the competency of a candidate that may have been acquired through formal, non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual meets the requirements specified in the nominated VET accredited course.
- Formal learning refers to learning that takes place through a structured program of instruction and is linked to the attainment of an AQF qualification or Statement of Attainment.
- Non-formal learning refers to learning that takes place through a structured program of instruction but does not lead to the attainment of an AQF qualification or statement of attainment.
- Informal learning refers to learning that results through the experience of work-related activities.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR AN RPL?
To apply for an RPL of the units of competency delivered by AUSTSWIM you must:
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Have proof of Australian Citizenship/Permanent residency or have a valid visa that enables you to undertake study with a non-CRICOS provider.
- Hold a current and valid CPR qualification (HLTAID009 or equivalent)
- Hold a current and Valid WWCC
- Have a USI (Unique Student Identifier)
CAN I APPLY FOR AN RPL?
For a successful RPL application, you must show current competency in the required knowledge and experience criteria for each unit of competency. In order for the assessor to determine your competency, you will be asked to submit documentation, this may be but is not limited to:
- A completed AUSTSWIM RPL Kit
- Current documentation (from the past 3 years or less) which itemises your experience/qualification. (e.g. Induction/in-service training that lists the skills covered).
- Evidence that the documentation you are providing is your own work or you have contributed to its development. (e.g. lesson plans).
- Multiple documents to support different aspects of your experience/qualification. (e.g. water familiarisation, water safety & strokes).

In accordance with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF), AUSTSWIM may acknowledge the skills and abilities a teacher has previously acquired through formal and non-formal learning, plus any previous volunteering or work experience.

- Successfully complete AUSTSWIM accreditation requirements.
- Complete the AUSTSWIM RPL Process – Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety.

The above assessment elements must be successfully completed to gain the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Licence.

LICENCE TRANSFER
An AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Licence will be issued and valid for 3 years.
Please note as this is not a credit transfer, no new statement of attainment will be issued.
