Diversify your career opportunities or gain employment by joining Australia’s best swimming teachers by becoming an AUSTSWIM Licenced Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety.
AUSTSWIM is inviting expressions of interest (EOI) to complete the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course. This training is fully subsidised by the NSW Government as part of the Smart and Skilled program.
The funded opportunity is available to people who:
Want to gain employment, or
Change their existing careers, or
To continue training to complete a full qualification.
Eligibility for Candidates
To be eligible, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Live and work in NSW; and
Are unemployed, and are seeking skills to obtain employment or work towards a higher level of education i.e. Certificate III
Are an 1. Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent Australian resident 2. holds a humanitarian visa or is a partner visa holder whose sponsor holds a humanitarian visa (contact AUSTSWIM for more information); and
Are 16* years or over; and
Is no longer in secondary education (except for registered home school students). *Age has been amended to reflect the minimum age requirement for an AUSTSWIM Licence.
Important information you need to know before submitting your expression of interest
Submitting an EOI does not automatically guarantee your spot on a course. The final selection in a fully subsidised AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Course depends on your eligibility, government funding allocations and available space on a course.
The AUSTSWIM Course must be completed within 3 months of attending the face-to-face workshop.
At the face-to-face workshop, candidates will be required to swim 10 metres and tow a person in water to safety over 10 metres.
Delivery Strategy
This interactive course is delivered in a blended format, including the following:
Attend a face-to-face workshop over 2 days.
Complete workplace training at a swim centre.
Complete an online assessment.
National Recognition
When candidates have successfully completed the AUSTSWIM Course within 3 months, they will be issued a statement of attainment with the competency units noted below. They will be then able to start paid work at a swim school.
SISCAQU023 - Plan swimming lessons
SISCAQU024 - Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
SISCAQU020 - Perform water rescues
SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills
SISCAQU026 - Teach swimming strokes
Additional Costs
Candidates will be required to pay for:
An accredited cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate (CPR). *The statement of attainment must contain the HLTAID009 competency unit.
A working with children check (WWCC) if over 18 years of age. A volunteer WWCC is acceptable until a position in a swim school is attained; an employee WWCC must then be held.
The AUSTSWIM Licence
On successful completion of the AUSTSWIM Course, candidates will receive the AUSTSWIM Licence which is valid for 3 years (at no cost to the candidate).
"Please note that AUSTSWIM is not a CRICOS provider and cannot enrol students on an international student visa subclass 500 for courses run in Australia."
