A friend could help you take the next step into swim teaching or Aqua

There is often someone who helps us take the first step towards something new. A friend who sends a course link. A colleague who says, “I reckon you would be good at this.” Someone who is happy to learn alongside us.

AUSTSWIM’s Refer a Friend and Bring a Mate campaign gives that encouragement a practical next step. Across four categories, eligible pairs have a chance to win $500 between them, $250 each, while helping more people explore swim teaching and Aqua instruction.

Learn with someone you know

If you and a friend have been talking about becoming swim teachers, Bring a Mate is a reason to look at course dates together. You can choose the same eligible Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course, encourage each other and share the experience of learning something new.

The same opportunity is available through Bring a Mate for the AUSTSWIM Aqua Exercise Instructor course. Perhaps you enjoy Aqua classes together, already work in fitness, or would like to help others enjoy being active in the water. Learning alongside someone you know can make getting started feel more manageable.

Each candidate completes their own enrolment, learning and assessment. Taking a course together offers encouragement and company while you each develop your skills.

Recommend work you enjoy

Existing swim teachers and Aqua instructors know what the work involves. You may know someone with the patience, care and people skills to enjoy it too. Refer a Friend lets eligible teachers and instructors introduce a new candidate to the relevant AUSTSWIM course.

Your experience can help them ask useful questions about training, the working day and local opportunities. Share the information, talk about what you enjoy and encourage them to decide whether the course suits their circumstances.

Work built around people

Swim teaching brings together practical skills, judgement and encouragement. A teacher can help a nervous learner feel more confident and develop swimming and water safety skills. Aqua instructors help people participate in group exercise and enjoy moving in the water.

There are opportunities for qualified teachers and instructors across aquatic centres and community programs. Working hours and vacancies vary, so it is worth asking local employers about the roles they need to fill. For some people, the work can complement study, family commitments or another job.

Choose your category

Refer a Friend to TSW is for an eligible existing swim teacher and a new TSW candidate. Bring a Mate to TSW is for two eligible candidates taking the same listed TSW course. Refer a Friend to Aqua is for an eligible existing Aqua instructor and a new Aqua candidate. Bring a Mate to Aqua is for two eligible candidates taking the same listed Aqua course.

One eligible pair will be drawn in each category. Each person in that pair receives a $250 cash prize, with a total prize pool of $2,000.

How to take part

Visit the campaign page to check the eligible courses, fees, entry requirements and competition terms. New candidates enrol and record their referral or mate using the campaign form after enrolment before 11:59 pm AEDT on 14 December 2026.

TSW candidates must complete the required two-day workshop component. Aqua candidates must complete the two-day Aqua workshop component. Bring a Mate pairs must complete the relevant component at the same course, by 14 December 2026. Booking alone does not confirm a draw entry.

The campaign runs from 19 October 2026 to 14 December 2026. Training, assessment and accreditation requirements still apply, and employment is not guaranteed.

Training more swimming teachers supports our role in drowning prevention. We are helping prepare the frontline workers who teach swimming and water safety skills, while introducing more people to this work.
